Valle Isarco
Holidays in the Valle Isarco valley
Holidays in Valle Isarco valleyThe Valle Isarco valley (Eisacktal) is one of the principal valleys in South Tyrol and extends itself 80 km southwards from the Brennero Pass to Bolzano. It is embedded in the Stubai Alps, the Dolomites and the Sarentine Alps and has many sites of natural beauty. The area around the basin of Vipiteno has a very nice landscape, the lonely mountain valleys Vizze, Ridanna and Racines lead into this basin. In the second basin further south we find the bishop’s city Bressanone, surrounded by idyllic villages and vineyards. The valley soon becomes tighter and shortly before leading into the basin of Bolzano it becomes a ravine. Side valleys of the area are the famous Val Gardena valley and the picturesque Valle di Funes valley with South Tyrol’s first adventure path accessible for wheelchairs. The valley offers a unique landscape and traditional hospitality. Especially in the low and central parts of the valley we find famous wine-growing villages, the most northern ones in Italy. In the Convent Novacella, close to Bressanone, excellent wines were already produced in the Middle Ages, up until today they are still appreciated. In autumn you can enjoy the so called “Törggelezeit” when you get together with friends in a rustic restaurant to drink new wine as sparkling “Sußer” together with roasted chestnuts and other regional specialities. In winter the holiday area Valle Isarco valley is a real winter paradise. The vicinity to the Alpine ridge guarantees a lot of snow, nevertheless you can enjoy the sun of the southern side of the Alps. The valley offers the famous ski resorts Ladurns, Racines - Giovo, Montecavallo, Plose and Gitschberg - Jochtal. All of these skiing areas have great slopes for skiers and snowboarders. Between Laion and Colle Isarco there are 27 cross country runs with a total length of nearly 300 km. Enjoy the atmosphere before Christmas on the Christmas markets of Bressanone and Vipiteno with fragrant mulled wine and South Tyrolean specialities, or walk around the city centres. But also in spring and summer the Valle Isarco valley has a lot to offer for families, mountaineers or tourists who want to take it easy. Many sunny walking paths and hiking trails lead you through the majestic mountain world. The so called Chestnut Walk (Kastanienweg) goes from Varna by Bressanone up to the Renon high plateau above Bolzano. Cyclists can also enjoy themselves on the well-developed tracks, there are easy routes for families but also more demanding tours. Worth a visit, especially for families, is the adventure mining museum Ridanna / Monteneve Mining World in the Val Ridanna valley, which gives a very good insight into the history of mining of the area. This mining museum is also accessible for visitors in a wheelchair with assistance. |
