Holidays in Castelbello & Ciardes
Castelbello - CiardesThe name of Castelbello (Kastelbell) derives from the Latin word Castellum bellum and means nice castle. The village (580 m a.s.l.) has vineyards on the hillsides and orchards in the lowlands. The castle Castelbello is enthroned on a cliff and can be visited. It was built around 1200 and nearly burned right down during the wars of liberation. The castle chapel is especially worth visiting, it has decorative frescos of the 16th century and a permanent exhibition on the famous Roman street Claudia Augusta. Castelbello has beautiful paths and trails, especially the so called Waalwege, paths along old irrigation canals, are very nice to walk along. The remains of castle Montalban can also be seen in the surroundings of the holiday village. The cycleway and walking path is ideal for families, older people and guests with mobiliy restrictions. The sport centre has a swimming pool, a skaterpark, a football pitch, a tennis court and a beach volleyball pitch. Ciardes (Tschars) at 620 m a.s.l. is one of the oldest settlement areas in the Val Venosta valley, today it has formed a double municipality with Castelbello. The village is situated on a sunny hill of the bottom part of the valley where excellent types of wine grow. Worth visiting is the Gothic parish church St. Martin situated in the village, it was built in the middle of the 16th century. The castle Juval is also worthwhile visiting. The ruin of the former castle was bought by the famous mountaineer Reinhold Messner in the year 1984 and rebuilt like it was originally. As special attraction it offers a collection of Tibetan art objects and cultural objects that can be visited in a guided tour. |
