Holidays in Merano & Surroundings

The holiday area Merano (Meran) and surroundings extends itself between the Val Passiria, the Val Senales and the Val d’Ultimo valleys.

Hardly any other vacation area in South Tyrol offers this diversity of contrasts. The natural scenery goes from the vineyards of Merano, over the picturesque dry hillsides of the sun exposed Monte Sole (sun mountain) of the Val Venosta valley up to the glaciers of the Alps.

A unique landscape in front of the scenery of the nature park Gruppo del Tessa with summits of nearly 3.500 m of height.
The surroundings of Merano are also called Burgraviato because of the many historical raised stands and beautiful castles. The Tyrol castle for example gave the whole country its name.
The area is also very rich in vineyards, apple trees and fruit orchards.

Discover Merano on foot on one of the many so called “Waalwege“, paths that follow the irrigation canals of the area, or on various cycle tracks. Merano also has a lot on offer for professional mountaineers. The quite ambitious Via Alta path of Merano in the nature park Gruppo del Tessa goes through the Val Passiria and the Val di Fosse valleys high above the basin of Merano. Well marked hiking trails, mountain restaurants and refuges with food and drink make the single sections of the 100 km long loop path to popular excursion destinations.

The cable car up to the summit Hirzer - Monte Cervina and Muta di Sopra, to the mountains Monte S. Vigilio, Monte Sole and Rio Lagundo and the chairlifts Lagundo-Velloi-Malga Leiter and Grünbodenexpress in Pfelders bring the hikers into the magnificent mountain world of this holiday resort. In all these areas there are many restaurants and refuges for recreation.

The spa town Merano is very famous because of its very mild Mediterranean climate and is very rich in sun.
The guests will certainly treasure the sea of blossoms of the apple trees in spring, the autumn tradition “Törggelen”, which comprises the eating of chestnuts together with other local specialities and drinking new wine in rustic surroundings and the large market that takes place every Friday in Merano.

Numerous sights and recreational and sporting activities, like the international canoe competitions in the river Passiria, make Merano a popular holiday destination.

It also offers many opportunities for the lovers of art and culture:
the music weeks of Merano (Meraner Musikwochen) and the cure concerts (Kurkonzerte) taking place from April to October. Other important events are the “Haflinger” horse race (Haflinger Bauerngalopprennen) with horses of the area of Avelengo and the grape festival of Merano (Meraner Traubenfest).

The modern Merano Thermal Baths bundle a large natural potential of the surroundings of Merano: a wellness offer characteristic for a holiday region that combines the alpine element water with extraordinary architecture.

The glacier cable cars of the Val Senales valley (Funivie Ghiacciai di Val Senales) and the ski resorts Schwemmalm in the Val d’Ultimo valley, Merano 2000 and Pfelders in the Val Passiria valley offer a unique ski holiday in South Tyrol for skiing, cross country skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing/sledging on fantastic slopes and also for snowshoeing and ice climbing.
