Vipiteno (Sterzing) lies at a height of 948 m above sea level and is the most northern city of Italy. It lies embedded in green mountain pastures and meadows, only a few kilometres away from the historic Brennero Pass and the border to Austria.

The picturesque town has an extremely well preserved city centre with the most beautiful road in South Tyrol, i.e. Neustadt, which comprises town houses with historic facades, nice cafes and shops.

Worthwhile visiting are the spittle church of the Holy Spirit with a magnificent fresco cycle of Hans von Bruneck, the founder of the School of Painting of the Val Pusteria valley.
Also the Elizabeth church and castle Reifenstein with its beautiful illusion painting in the green hall are very beautiful.

The city museum Musche has remaining parts of the erstwhile wing alter of Hans Multscher.

Vipiteno is also a recreation and winter resort with the ski resort Montecavallo close by.

During the Christmas period you can enjoy the atmosphere on the Christmas market of Vipiteno with fragrant mulled wine and typical South Tyrolean gastronomic specialities.

In summer the fresh air in the mountains and the sun of the southern side of the Alps makes Vipiteno a popular resort for walking and hiking on one of the many walking paths or hiking trails.
