Holidays in Bolzano & Surroundings

The South of Südtirol (South Tyrol)  comprises the holiday areas Bolzano & surroundings, the Val Sarentino valley, the Val d’Adige valley, Lake Caldaro (Kalterer See) and the famous South Tyrolean Wine Road.

The South of Südtirol (South Tyrol) has always been a transitional region between the north and the south in which the Romanic culture and language always existed along with the German one. This special southern flair can still be felt today.

The vast Val d’Adige valley that is open to the south is dominating. In the west the sunny low range terrace arises in front of the 2.100 m high mountain Monte di Mezzo, in the east however forested inclinations are dominating. At Salorno the steep inclinations of the west and east meet towards the middle of the Val d’Adige valley and form the chasm of Salorno.

The region is climatically favoured due to its advantageous geographical position, it is open to the south and is he largest wine region in South Tyrol. In the surroundings of Bolzano and in the mild areas around the Lake Caldaro (Kalterer See) excellent white and red wines grow, like the Gewürztraminer or the Kalterer See.

The road that connects the famous wine villages Termeno, Caldaro and Appiano is called South Tyrolean Wine Road and is the oldest wine road of Italy. Today the South Tyrolean wine museum in the centre of Caldaro explains the history and importance of the local wine to the visitors.

The southern character of the landscape is not only reflected in the mild climate, but also in the method of construction of the stately castles, the noble manors and country houses and the picturesque wine villages. The South of Südtirol (South Tyrol) offers a wonderful holiday all year round. In spring when the apple trees bloom the whole valley seems immerged in a sea of blossoms.

In summer the Lake Caldaro (Kalterer See) and the Monticolo Lakes (Montiggler Seen) attract many tourists. The Lake Caldaro is one of the warmest swimming lakes in the Alps and is also ideal for surfing and sailing. Many walking paths and bike tracks surround the lakes.

On the left valley side of the Val d’Adige we find the localities Salorno, Ora, Egna and Laives. Old castles and historic manors and country houses give the landscape a picturesque accent. The chasm of Salorno forms the border to the neighbouring province Trentino in the south.

To the north of Bolzano lies the geographical heart of South Tyrol, the beautiful Val Sarentino valley. A rocky ravine connects it to the basin of Bolzano, starting from the village Sarentino the valley opens up and forms a wonderful landscape. The valley is especially popular because of its tranquillity and nativeness.

The valley also guarantees fun and recreation in winter, the family-friendly ski resort Reinswald offers good slopes for skiers and tobogganers/sledgers.

The sunny high plateaus of Renon and San Genesio are forested and ideal for long excursions in summer and for cross country skiing in winter. Even in winter it is never really ice cold here and you have a great scenery.

In winter the smaller ski resorts Corno del Renon and Passo Oclivi are suitable for families with small children with easy slopes for beginners.
